The Inquiry held a week of OPEN hearings in October 2023. The Chair of the Inquiry, heard opening statements from the Lead Counsel to the Inquiry Oliver Glasgow KC. Mr Glasgow set out:
- The anticipated progress that the Inquiry intends to make over the coming months.
- An overview of the evidence that was available, including a brief view of deliberate detention operations where family members of the deceased are part of the Afghan Family Core Participant group.
- A review of the complaints that were raised about Deliberate Detention Operations.
- A consideration of the Royal Military Police investigations that were launched into complaints made, and their eventual outcome.
The Chair also heard from Brian Altman KC, lead counsel for the Ministry of Defence and Paul Greaney KC, lead counsel to the Royal Military Police; and Richard Hermer KC, on behalf of the Afghan families.
